Vernissage, an Exhibition Preview Series: March 14th, 5-8 PM
KMAC is proud to present Chico da Silva: Amazônian Legend, the first solo museum exhibition in North America introducing viewers to the extraordinary work of Francisco da Silva (1910 – 1985), affectionately known as “Chico,” one of Brazil’s most influential Indigenous artists. Organized by guest curator Simon Watson, the exhibition features over 50 paintings created between 1964 and 1984 and focuses on three of the artist’s signature themes: fish, birds, and mythic creatures.
Born in the Amazon rainforest, Chico embarked on an artistic path that was shaped by personal loss and the region’s vibrant cultural heritage. Following the death of his father, he moved with his mother to the coastal city of Fortaleza, where his talent began to blossom. Without a formal education or the ability to read or write, Chico began expressing his creativity spontaneously, in paintings he made on the walls of fishermen’s houses. His imaginative depictions of a fantastical world filled with birds, fish, and mythological creatures bear a striking resemblance to contemporary street art, and illustrate an instinctive, organic approach to artmaking. This initial phase of his artistic development paved the way for Chico’s later success, as he transformed everyday spaces into vibrant canvases capturing the essence of life.
Chico’s artwork is characterized by exuberance and sophistication and employs a unique drawing technique defined by bold lines and rich colors. His compositions often depict chimerical creatures engaged in dynamic interactions, which reflects the oral traditions and mythologies of Northern Brazilian culture. This vivid imagery invites viewers to engage with the stories and fables that have shaped Chico’s artistic vision, offering a glimpse into the intricate relationship between humanity and the natural world.
Underscoring Chico’s profound connection to the Amazonian landscape, the animals depicted in his images, both real and imagined, serve as metaphors for the complexities of existence, embodying the struggles and triumphs of life in the rainforest. In an era when environmental concerns are increasingly pressing, Chico’s work resonates with contemporary audiences, reminding us of the importance of preserving our planet’s biodiversity and cultural heritage.
In presenting Chico da Silva: Amazônian Legend, KMAC invites audiences to immerse themselves in the vibrant world of this remarkable artist. Through his visionary paintings, Chico da Silva offers a profound exploration of identity, culture, and the interconnectedness of all living beings. The artist’s legacy, once obscured, now shines brightly, inspiring new generations to appreciate the richness of Indigenous art and the stories that shape our understanding of the world. This exhibition is not merely a celebration of Chico’s work. It serves as a call to recognize and honor the deep-rooted traditions and mythologies that continue to influence contemporary art and culture. In a time of ecological crisis, Chico’s art stands as a reminder of the beauty and fragility of our natural world and urges us to reflect on our place within it.
